What is Yoni Steaming?

Also known as vaginal steaming or v-steaming.

Yoni steaming is a holistic health practice in which a woman allows the warmth of herbal steam to gently permeate her vagina.

What is a Yoni?

Yoni” is a Sanskrit word that means womb, uterus, vagina, vulva. It can mean any of these alone or all of them together, as an all-encompassing word for the entire womb space. It also represents the divine feminine power/goddess known as “Shakti.”

Many women use the word yoni instead of vagina because it carries a deep respect for this part of the body.

    Who should not Yoni Steam?

First and most importantly, women who are pregnant, or think there is any possibility that they might be, should NOT do any type of Yoni Steam. Doing so may endanger the pregnancy, as many of the herbs used can alter hormone levels and can cause contractions of the uterus.

Women should NOT steam if you are trying to conceive and have already ovulated.

Women also should NOT steam while menstruating / spotting.

Women who have any type of internal infection ( cervical, uterine or ovarian inflammation ), or a fever, are encouraged NOT to steam until the symptoms have passed.

Women should NOT steam when open sores or blisters are present.

Women with active hot flashes should NOT steam.

After birth or miscarriage avoid Steaming BEFORE pregnancy matter has cleared out (blood has turned brown) is NOT advised, This can lead to heavy bleeding.

If you have any vaginal piercings, they should be removed prior to steaming as the metal can become excessively hot and cause pain or damage in the area.

It is NOT recommended for women who have an Intrauterine Device ( IUD ).

Why isn't it recommended that women with an Intrauterine Device ( IUD ) do a yoni steam?

It is NOT recommended for women with any kind of IUD to steam because the medicinal properties of the herbs are intended to cause the uterus to contract and shed its lining. When an IUD is present, the risk is that this could cause the uterine tissue to shed or contract in such a way that it could dislodge, shift or expel the IUD. With that said, some women with IUDs have tried the Yoni Steaming and have reported great results, including reduced cramps during menstruation. However, we DO NOT advocate for steaming with an IUD, and doing so is at your own risk. You may want to talk to your women's health care provider for his/her recommendation.

    Is there an age restriction?

There is no “official” age restriction for Yoni Steaming. As a rule and safety precaution, anyone under the age of 18 should ONLY steam under adult supervision.

In some traditions, as a rite of passage, mothers or other elder female caretakers will offer a vaginal steam to young women after completing their first menstruation. There is no maximum age range, and many women continue to steam well into post-menopausal years.

What to expect after Vaginal Steaming.

    Ist Yoni Steaming:

This varies from woman to woman, and depends on countless individual factors including your age, where you are in your cycle, why you are steaming, what kinds of periods you have been experiencing, if you are trying to get pregnant or if you are postpartum, what your personal emotional/psychological/spiritual state is, etc. Because every woman is different, results will always vary.

That being said, you can generally expect to feel immediately relaxed, more in tune with your womb space and vagina, rejuvenated, confident, and open to your feminine creativity. Intense emotional release during a steam session is also very common ( You might laugh or cry, and that is great! )

Physically, the most common general report after a first steam is that stagnant or built up matter tends to be released/cleansed during the next period. Subsequent periods then tend to be lighter as a result of this.

    Discharge / Bleeding:

After any steaming, If you have a lot of “induration” (stuck material) inside your uterus, you can probably feel that it really wants and needs to come out. In this case, the herbal steam may immediately help to loosen it. This could result in the uterine lining shedding, which would of course mean bleeding, even if it is not the usual time of the month. Don’t be alarmed, even if a lot of material comes out over the next few days.

    Cramping:

Again, if the lining of your uterine walls is indurated, there is likely a great deal of material left over from past cycles that needs to be released. With the support of the herbs, your uterus will begin to work hard to release the stuck material. Because your uterus contracts when it works, this could cause some discomfort in the short term, but there is no need to worry! Your future cycles should be more comfortable as a result.

    Can I steam without herbs?

Absolutely, but it’s nowhere near as nice. If you steam with water alone you will still get the effects of the moist heat. However, the essences of the herbs you use can add so much to the experience, not only in terms of their specific properties / benefits, but also in terms of relaxation and their aromas.

When is the best time to Vaginal Steam?

You can steam at any time of the month, as long as you are not menstruating.

It is typically recommended that for treating menstrual pain, you do at least two vaginal steams in the week leading up to your period. After doing so, you will likely see a change in the fluid you pass when your period begins.

You may also steam once after your cycle ends, to clear out any excess materials.

    How often should I steam?

This depends on so many different factors. Every woman has a different body, different cycle, and different reasons for steaming.

As part of an overall self-care, women should steam once or 2x per month, always during weeks in which you are not menstruating

    1st Steam:

Drink A LOT of water before and after session, some women can suffer from headaches after a steam if they are not properly hydrated.

Yoni Steaming is a form of detox and water helps with further elimination.

    Cramping:

Women who suffer from pain and cramping, old dark blood, bloating or exhaustion during menstruation should steam 2 to 3 times within the week before menstruation.

    Vaginal Mucus:

Excess Vaginal Mucus, Steam 3-5 days in a row, discharge often lightens up and eventually should clear up.

    Infertility:

Women who are experiencing fertility challenges should steam once per week, and maybe twice during pre-ovulation, to make sure that the tissue is moist and that the cervical fluids are clear and copious. They should expect to steam for a minimum of three to six months before possible results ( These results may vary as there are many factors that affect fertility ).

    Postpartum:

After birth most women bleed for between 1-6 weeks. This bleeding is called lochia and is a combination of blood, uterine tissue and bacteria. The point of the placental implantation will heal and then come away from the uterine wall this scab is known as Eschar.

Yoni steaming may be done 3x per week for four weeks to facilitate healing and toning of the uterus and vagina.

If breastfeeding, caution should be taken with herbs used. For additional information, please reach out to us.

    Menopause:

Women who are experiencing or who have passed menopause should steam at least 3x per year for maintenance, but may steam more often if it feels right.

    Infection:

Women steaming to address an infection should do a Mild steam for about 7-10 days providing there are no cuts and open wounds.

    Special Note:

PLEASE FOLLOW SUGGESTED DURATION TIME FOR STEAMING ON THE “HOW LONG SHOULD I STEAM?” SECTION

Can Yoni Steaming help with fertility challenges?

Absolutely! Yoni Steaming has been seen by many women to support fertility. There may be many reasons for fertility challenges, but one of those reasons is induration ( build up of material ) on the uterine wall. Yoni steaming helps to loosen that material and allow it to release through menstruation, making space for the fertilized egg to successfully attach itself.

With just a few weeks of cleansing and nourishing, you can reset your reproductive system and fortify your womb in preparation to nourish your growing baby.

It is recommended to steam at least once per week, when you are not menstruating, for three months before expecting to see results. Do NOT try to conceive during the 3 months of yoni steam, as the cleansing action may prevent the fertilized egg from attaching to the uterine wall. After the 3 months of yoni steaming, you may resume trying to conceive and hopefully have successful conception within one to three cycles.

Can Vaginal Steaming promote better intimacy?

Yes, Yoni steaming can definitely promote better sexual experience.

On an emotional level, yoni steaming supports to cultivate a profound sense of self-love and increases our self-confidence.

On the physical level, yoni steaming increases circulation and increases lubrication, which is clearly great for the libido and sex life as well.

In fact, the very act of steaming is slightly arousing. The simple increase in warmth can stimulate your sex drive, and just the experience of vaginal steaming itself can be a pleasurable turned on.

Many women have reported better sex, less painful sex, and increased libido as a direct result of vaginal steaming. Any practice that puts you more in touch with your vagina is going to increase your awareness of and sensitivity in the region. Tuning in to your yoni through vaginal steaming is also a gateway to sacred sexuality, which can lead you ( and your partner ) to new heights of cosmic orgasmic pleasure.

Can I use essential oils with or without herbs?

It is recommended NOT to use essential oils at all for any Yoni Steaming session as EOs are too strong, having potential for burning or damage to the vulva tissue.
